May The Fourth Be With You!

·3 mins

Hey Kiddo,

I’ve been scheming for a while, and much of it came together this May the 4th weekend. There are Star Wars showings at older cinemas in Ottawa and I wanted to take you.

Firstly, I’d begun talking to you about Star Wars years, but really weeks ago. You haven’t been and weren’t interested.

We tried to watch the prequel movies. They are horrible, but– because they are faster paced– they are the reccomended films as the introduction for younger viewers. Big mistake– you wanted none of it.

With time slipping by, I resorted to bribery. We’d get t-shirts and popcorn, which was enough to get some buy in.

But we’d have to watch the originals before we were off to see Return of the Jedi– OK, fine! And then you met Darth Vader!

Who is this?! what happened?! Where did Ben Kenobi go? How does he come back? Do we see him again?

Then they put Han Solo in carbonite.

Was he dead? How could he not be? Will they get him out? How will they get him out?

There were lots of questions going in to Return of the Jedi, and so you, I, Talia, and Andrew biked over to the Mayfair theatre where we met up with Freia, Vida, and their dad Sol. And then you got to see the Galaxy get saved and meet the Ewoks!

This all happened on Sunday, May 3rd. It wasn’t even May the Fourth

May the Fourth was a Monday. I pulled you out of school for an appointment with Opthamology at CHEO. You’ve had mostly regular follow-up appointments at CHEO since you had your eye surgery when you were 4. This was your last appointment– your eyes are well healed and the care of your eyes now reverts back to optometrists. This was some great unexpected news.

On the way out of the appointment, in the lobby of CHEO, we bumped into Darth Vader! You didn’t want a photo with him, but I sure did. And Darth Vader leaned in and said « Hi Tim ». Yup, that’s right– Darth Vader and I are on a first name basis! It was actually BigMac-Derek from the community centre– I didn’t know it was him, but did know that he did these kinds of things and had an amazing Darth Vader costume. At any rate, I’ve got a HUGE smile on my face for lots of reasons.

And later this month we’ll be able to watch The Mandalorian and Baby YodaGrogu! You’re doing great Kiddo! May the force be with you, always. With all our love, Mum & Dad
